CEO & Chairman of the Board
Alan Turfe has been Chairman and CEO of J M Smith Corporation since March, 2017. He is only the third Chairman and CEO since the company's incorporation in 1944.
Alan began his career working his way through college on the assembly line at General Motors (GM). Upon graduating with an MBA, he became a financial analyst for GM, moving up through the ranks, including being promoted to Paris, France, as European Finance Director for GM’s Automotive Components Division, and then named CFO of GM Worldwide Purchasing and Logistics. Alan led GM into e-commerce with a joint venture that generated more than $4 billion in shareholder value and resulted in him being appointed Co-CEO of the joint venture company.
Following a decade with GM, Alan joined Thermo Fisher Scientific as Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing, then was named Group Vice President of Operations and ultimately was named President of the Anatomical Pathology Group. He then joined IDEX Corporation as President of Micropump Inc. In all of these roles, Alan oversaw sites in the U.S. and overseas, growing these businesses through strategic acquisitions and new product development. Prior to joining J M Smith Corporation, Alan served as Senior Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer at Fresenius Medical Care, leveraging global manufacturing and distribution in pharmaceuticals and other medical categories to expand margins and drive incremental profitability.
Alan earned both his BS and MBA degrees from the University of Michigan. He and his wife, Lenda, have two adult sons and are active in philanthropy.
Ken is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy and the retired president of Smith Drug Company. Ken joined J M Smith Corporation in 1981 as the Director of National Marketing for QS/1 prior to moving to Smith Drug Company. Ken, a former community pharmacist, is active in local civic and philanthropic organizations and is an avid golfer. Ken also serves as the Chairman of the J M Smith Foundation.
Paula Harper Bethea has been a member of the Board of the J M Smith Corporation since 2016. She has been Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of South State Bank and South State Corporation since 2013. She currently is President of Strategic Synergies LLC and President of Dillon Property Holdings LLC. She was formerly the Executive Director of the South Carolina Education Lottery and was one of nine South Carolinians chosen in 2001 to establish the Lottery. Prior to this position, she was with Bethea, Jordan & Griffin PA and the McNair Law Firm from 1979 to 2009, where she served as Director of External Relations and Business Development.
She served on the board of directors of the former First Financial Holdings, Inc. of Charleston, South Carolina, from 1996 until 2013, serving as its Chairman for several years. She is the former Chairman of the United Way of America’s Board of Governors, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, the Centers of Economic Excellence, and is Immediate Past President of the USC Alumni Association. She holds honorary doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina and Presbyterian College.
Mr. Cash is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy and is the president and CEO of the Caman Group, Inc., which specializes in private investments in real estate, long-term care facilities and pharmacies. Mr. Cash serves as Chairman of the Board of Carolina Alliance Bank, Board member of Apella Health Management, Past Chairman of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, Trustee of the Spartanburg County Foundation and Chairman of the VSP Foundation. Mr. Cash is a 2012 recipient of the South Carolina Hospital Association Distinguished Hospital Trustee of the Year Award.
Wade is a resident and native of Spartanburg, South Carolina. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is the president of the mechanical consulting firm Crow & Bulman Engineering Inc., located in Spartanburg.
Tim is an attorney and member of the South Carolina Bar in general practice with a concentration in business organizations, business transactions and commercial real estate law. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and graduated from Wofford College and the University of South Carolina Law School. He has served on the Board of Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, and he and his wife, Nan, are active Mobile Meals volunteers. He has served on the Board since 1997, was previously Chairman of the Compensation Committee and is currently serving on the Governance Committee.
Charles is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Business Administration. He was a financial analyst and auditor with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
Ed is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina. He is the past CEO of Carolina Radiology Associates, LLC of Myrtle Beach and served as Chief of Staff at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. Ed is a past board member of First Financial Holdings and South State Bank.
Rogers is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean for Social Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. Educated at Michigan State and Harvard Universities, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society and the President Elect of the American Political Science Association.
James S. Smith is the son of James M. Smith, Jr. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Marketing. He began working at J M Smith in high school, where he learned most of his computer skills as a mainframe programmer. He was the corporate president for seven years. Following that tenure, he developed an online prescription claims processing platform, which was later acquired by WebMD. Mr. Smith has multiple business interests in South Carolina and resides in Spartanburg with his wife and two daughters.
