J M Smith Applauds the Declaration of the Opioid Epidemic as a National Emergency - November 15, 2017

This is a complex issue, and, like the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration and other experts working in the field, we believe that any solution must be multi-faceted to be effective.

Chairman and CEO Alan Turfe issued the following statement today:

“J M Smith Corporation is committed to helping end the opioid epidemic facing the US., and supports the declaration, made by President Trump, of a public health emergency. Recognizing that illegal drug use is a crisis in our country, we applaud efforts to eliminate drug diversion, abuse and other illegal activity related to prescription drugs. We work closely with a variety of government agencies to ensure that appropriate measures are in place to safeguard the security, safety and legality of prescription medication as part of our commitment to being part of the solution to this epidemic.

This is a complex issue, and, like the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration and other experts working in the field, we believe that any solution must be multi-faceted to be effective.

We believe that the use of technology, such as pharmacy software that identifies at-risk patients for pharmacists, will enable intervention prior to addiction; that same use of technology, when leveraged at a national level, will help identify potential diversionary activity by prescribers and pharmacies, cutting off access to those who profit from the epidemic.

We support the efforts of law enforcement, local, state and federal, to enforce regulations against drug diversion and close down pharmacies and physician offices engaging in illegal activity. We support supplying first responders, including law enforcement, with naloxone kits to help those in an active overdose, as well as making such kits more readily available within the communities we serve.

We believe that education and addiction services are critical components in winning this battle. Education for prescribers, for pharmacists, for patients and for the public at large. We are heartened to see a presidential call for a lifting of a rule against using Medicaid dollars for funding many addiction services, and call for increased support, both public and private, of education and treatment programs.

We are interested in the upcoming report from the President’s Commission on Combatting Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis, and pledge to work alongside those who seek to solve this crisis.”
